Proverbs 6:12-19

In Proverbs 6:12-19 Solomon describes a worthless person.  He paints a detailed picture.  At the root is wickedness.  That is built upon with these characteristics:

  • Crooked speech
  • Winks
  • Signals with his feet
  • Points with his finger
  • Devises evil with his perverted heart
  • Sows discord

A worthless person, a wicked man, goes about with crooked speech, winks with his eyes, signals with his feet, points with his finger, with perverted heart devises evil, continually sowing discord; therefore calamity will come upon him suddenly; in a moment he will be broken beyond healing.”

Evil is the underlying issue, and that evil comes out in many different ways as Solomon describes them.  But the key is not the how, but the what happens to someone who is this way.  Calamity comes upon them – they reap what they sow – and in a moment they are broken beyond repair.  They don’t just experience some discomfort.  He tells us they destroy themselves beyond what can be fixed.  Humpty Dumpty falls off the wall into a million pieces that are unable to be put back together again. Sin and evil carry a significant price.  We often discount that, but in fact it is always the case.

Solomon goes on to describe for us seven things that God hates.  Strong word – so definitely worth paying attention to.  “There are six things that the Lord hates, seven that are an abomination to him: haughty eyes, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, a heart that devises wicked plans, feet that make haste to run to evil, a false witness who breathes out lies, and one who sows discord among brothers.”  Here is the list:

  1. Haughty eyes
  2. Lying tongue
  3. Hands that shed innocent blood
  4. Heart that devises wicked plans
  5. Feet that run to evil
  6. False witness that breathes lies
  7. One who sows discord among the brothers

Remember – we are told God hates these things.  They aren’t just things to avoid – they are things to run away from.

Solomon’s list includes many parts of our anatomy.  It includes eyes and tongue, hands and feet, and a heart that is deep within.  God knows that we are evil in many ways.  The issues of sin come from all over our being.  Lies and discord, the two areas not specifically mentioned with some part of the body, are certainly related to our heart and how we treat others.  Actually the heart is where all these things emanate from.  Sin is a choice, and we are driven by what is in our heart.  If we take in the wrong input, and hang around the wrong influences, our heart is far more likely to stray from God’s ways and lead us to make choices contrary to His will and His ways.  God expects us to live in accordance with His direction.  When we don’t, it isn’t a mild response – He hates it – and will take action to address it!
