John 6:45-51

John 6:45-51  has Jesus reminding the people about His mission.  “Only then do I do my work, putting people together, setting them on their feet, ready for the End”. A day is coming when everything will end.  We need to prepare, and Jesus has given us His Word through scripture to help us do that.  When we open those pages, we can be “personally taught by God” just as the prophets wrote.  The Bible is a letter from God, and it has your name on it.  We merely need to open the cover and dive in.  Jesus taught us what we need to know through those pages.  But we have to read and study to be able to understand.

Jesus makes a very, very important statement here.  “I’m telling you the most solemn and sober truth now: Whoever believes in me has real life, eternal life”.  This short sentence sums it up – if we want eternal life – we have to believe in the One who can provide it which is Jesus Christ.  It’s pretty cut and dried.  The reason it is solemn and sober is that there are no alternatives.  There is no plan B.  The only option is to come into a personal relationship with the Savior and believe in Him.  Seems simple enough, yet people for generations have fought that decision and refused to make Chist Lord in their life.  They don’t want to give up control.

Said another way, Jesus tells us that He is like bread. “I am the Bread of Life. Your ancestors ate the manna bread in the desert and died. But now here is Bread that truly comes down out of heaven. Anyone eating this Bread will not die, ever. I am the Bread—living Bread!—who came down out of heaven. Anyone who eats this Bread will live—and forever! The Bread that I present to the world so that it can eat and live is myself, this flesh-and-blood self”.  Salvation begins with a one time acceptance of Jesus as Savior and Lord.  It happens when we confess, repent and receive Him in a personal relationship.

It’s like eating bread daily, just like the Israelite’s did on their forty year journey with Moses toward the Promised Land.  But with Jesus, the living and active personal relationship also needs to be daily and often.  That relationship is the foundation for eternity.  It is the ticket to forever. What have you done with the Bread of Life?  God sent Jesus to make a way – a way to deal with our sin which will separate us from God if we don’t address it.  There are two options.  We either live a sin free life and earn eternity through holy and godly living (which none of us can do), or we have an atonement for sin from some other way.  That other option is Jesus.  There is no other.  We must receive the Bread of Life if we want eternity with God.  Have you?
