John 3:33-36

John 3:33-36 continues to address the reality of Jesus and why God sent Him to the earth.  We have an issue accepting our need for a Savior.  It just doesn’t fit the American dream where we pick up our bootstraps and are self sufficient in every way.  Unfortunately that won’t work in the spiritual realm. This problem called sin hangs on, and it will prevent us from achieving the outcome we desire for our life – eternity with Christ in heaven.  John wrote about our attitude correctly.  “No one wants to deal with these facts. But anyone who examines this evidence will come to stake his life on this: that God himself is the truth.”

A lot of us live in denial.  We don’t want to accept the truth.  But whether we will believe it or not doesn’t change the truth.  God alone is truth.  There is no other standard than His.  If we take the time to listen to His truth and study what God has given us in His Word, we will come to understand that He alone is truth.  Jesus was the voice of truth.  “The One that God sent speaks God’s words. And don’t think he rations out the Spirit in bits and pieces”.  Jesus was the messenger of truth.  He lived it and the Bible records God’s truth through His words and actions.  We can study and know it merely by knowing Jesus.

God loved us through the way that He loved His Son, Jesus Christ.  It may seem a bit strange that His love involved a brutal death on the Cross, but it was necessary to fulfill God’s plan for His world.  “The Father loves the Son extravagantly. He turned everything over to him so he could give it away—a lavish distribution of gifts”. God gave His all to Jesus to be the Way, the Truth, and the Life.  God’s love for Christ was over the top – He didn’t hold anything back. And because Jesus has received all things, He is able to give us all things as Christ Followers.  But there is a catch.  It isn’t just a free flow of God’s love and goodness.

It boils down to what we do with Jesus.  If we reject the Son, we reject God’s gift of eternal life.  That is the ultimate gift God is offering through Jesus.  You can’t take the gift but reject the giver of the gift.  “That is why whoever accepts and trusts the Son gets in on everything, life complete and forever! And that is also why the person who avoids and distrusts the Son is in the dark and doesn’t see life. All he experiences of God is darkness, and an angry darkness at that”. God doesn’t send His wrath on those who don’t believe.  They bring it upon themselves by their own choice to reject Him.  This is a truth we all must wrestle with.  Sin is our problem, and we need a Savior.  God loved us enough to provide Jesus as Savior to cover our sin, but we must choose to have a personal relationship with Him to receive it.

Guzik writes that John 3 is a must read chapter of the Bible:

  • The Sinner’s must: you must be born again (John 3:7).
  • The Savior’s must: so must the Son of Man be lifted up (John 3:14).
  • The Sovereign’s must: He must increase (John 3:30).
  • The Servant’s must: I must decrease (John 3:30).

We must face the truth of God’s Word and make a choice of what we will do with Jesus.  He alone is the way to eternal life.  What have you done with God’s offer of grace through Christ?
