John 5

John 5 has Jesus healing a man who has been laid up for decades.  Jesus comes along and asks him if he wants to be healed.  Of course, the man does, but does not know how to make that happen.  Jesus says “Get up, take up your bed, and walk”.  He speaks healing to this man who does exactly what Jesus says, even though it is the Sabbath day.  When he goes to the temple the religious leaders are not happy as this violates their law.  As a result, “this was why the Jews were persecuting Jesus, because he was doing these things on the Sabbath”.

It was one thing to be healing people, but entirely another for Jesus to violate the Sabbath laws no matter what He was doing.  “This was why the Jews  were seeking all the more to kill him, because not only was he breaking the Sabbath, but he was even calling God his own Father, making himself equal with God”.  It’s all about power and Jesus disrupting the system that the scribes and Pharisees hd carefully crafted and controlled for so many centuries.  They aren’t about to let things slip away with this guy who calls Himself God’s Son.

Jesus wasn’t really all that focused on healing people.  He knew His task was to save people from their sin.  And He makes that clear when He says: “Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life. He does not come into judgment, but has passed from death to life”.  In the simplest form, this is what salvation is all about.  As humans, we are guilty of sin.  Scripture is clear that all of us have sinned, and the wages of sin is death.  Thus Jesus says it plainly.  If we hear and believe, we are able to have our sin problem dealt with and we can move from death to life for eternity.  What a gift.  What a blessing from God through His love.

But people were unwilling to believe.  They were no different than many are today.  For any number of reasons, they struggle to accept the truth of sin in their lives and the eternal outcome it will carry.  “You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; and it is they that bear witness about me, yet you refuse to come to me that you may have life”.  Scripture is clear about our problem, and the solution.  It tells us that Jesus is the only way.  We have to come to Him and believe in order to receive the gift that God has given us.

  1. Excellent. You really zeroed in on what was happening, and still happens today.
