Daniel 2

Daniel 2 has the king having some dreams.  It’s unclear whether or not he remembered the details, but he was troubled by them.  “Nebuchadnezzar had dreams; his spirit was troubled, and his sleep left him”.  He asked that all the wise people in his kingdom be “summoned to tell the king his dreams”.  The king has no clue what the dream meant.  But he really wants to know.  So they bring these ‘wise guys’ in and the king tells them to “show me the dream and its interpretation”.  Not much help from the king here – in fact nothing – just tell me what the dream was and what it means.

So the scrambling begins.  They go through a series of back and forth excuses and end with “there is not a man on earth who can meet the king’s demand, for no great and powerful king has asked such a thing of any magician or enchanter or Chaldean”.  Remember, they are talking to the king here, not some regular guy off the street.  And these were supposedly the best of the best, so “the king was angry and very furious, and commanded that all the wise men of Babylon be destroyed”.  You just don’t say no to the king.

Daniel and his buddies were part of this group and when Daniel found out what was going to happen, “Daniel replied with prudence and discretion ….requested the king to appoint him a time, that he might show the interpretation to the king”.  Daniel knew you can’t just tell the king no.  Even though he had done it with the food not too long ago, he did it in a respectful and different way with an alternative and test to prove it was right.  Daniel has just requested a chance to get before the king but really had no clue to the dream or interpretation.  Check this out…..

“Daniel went to his house and made the matter known to Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah, his companions, and told them to seek mercy from the God of heaven concerning this mystery”.  So Daniel asks for an appointment to talk to the king with no idea of what to say.  He only knew that God knew and he trusted God to be faithful.  That’s when God moved – once Daniel admitted he had nothing and was completely at God’s mercy.  “Then the mystery was revealed to Daniel in a vision of the night”.  God didn’t give him the answer until he asked and waited.

So Daniel goes in and tells the king his dream and what it means.  “The dream is certain, and its interpretation sure”.  This wasn’t a guess or best effort.  And the king knows it is so and says “Truly, your God is God of gods and Lord of kings, and a revealer of mysteries, for you have been able to reveal this mystery”.  God had a plan to reveal Himself to the king.  And Daniel was His tool to do so.  But the impact went much farther.  Daniel become ruler over the whole province and “Daniel made a request of the king, and he appointed Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego over the affairs of the province of Babylon. But Daniel remained at the king’s court”.  Talk about a change from being a hunted ‘wise guy’ that was on death row to now the ruler of the kingdom.  That’s what God can do!
