Ezekiel 22

Ezekiel 22 has the prophet getting some direct actions to be taken from the Lord.  The time of Jerusalem’s destruction is approaching, and God wants His prophet to show the people their sins and the judgment that would be coming as a result.  Sin comes with a cost, and it is significant, not just during Ezekiel’s time, but for us today as well.  Leaders have been exploiting the people, without respect for God or His Law.  God’s had enough and the time of punishment and judgment is at hand.

Ezekiel makes a list of all their sins:

  • “treated father and mother lightly within you
  • The alien they have oppressed
  • the fatherless and the widow they have wronged
  • despised My holy things
  • profaned My Sabbaths
  • shedding blood
  • eaten at the mountain shrines
  • committed acts of lewdness
  • uncovered their fathers’ nakedness
  • humbled her who was unclean in her menstrual impurity
  • committed abomination with his neighbor’s wife
  • lewdly defiled his daughter-in-law
  • humbled his sister
  • taken bribes
  • taken interest and profits
  • injured your neighbors for gain
  • you have forgotten Me”

That’s a serious list of sin.  The city was filled with lies, violence, idolatry, bribery, oppression and sexual sins of the worse kind.  And God has had enough.

God tells Ezekiel He is going to take action.  “I, the Lord, have spoken and will act”.  And God goes on to describe exactly what He’s going to do to Jerusalem and His people:

  • “I will scatter you among the nations
  • I will disperse you through the lands
  • I will consume your uncleanness from you
  • I will gather you in My anger and in My wrath
  • I will lay you there and melt you
  • I will gather you and blow on you with the fire of My wrath

God’s going to put them into a furnace to refine them.  He’s going to gather the people in Jerusalem for a fiery judgment. But instead of the refining process producing pure metal, it would show that there was nothing but worthless metal. As the fire of the furnace melts the metal, so God in his anger would punish Jerusalem.  He’s going to take action.

Even with this long list of sins, and the anger it has brought to God, He still hopes someone will rise to the occasion and lead well.  “I searched for a man among them who would build up the wall and stand in the gap before Me for the land, so that I would not destroy it; but I found no one”.  God looked for one godly person who would stand in the gap.  Moses was that guy for God’s people some generations earlier.  But now, during Ezekiel’s time, God can’t find one.  Are you the kind of person God would be looking for today?  Someone who is working for God’s ways in His power following His direction?  That’s what He’s looking for.  Let there be many today who would fit His criteria!
