Jeremiah 27 has the prophet passing God’s truth to the people about the coming captivity of Babylon. The word was not just for Judah, but for all the kingdoms around that nation. God makes it clear that He is in control of all things. “It is I who by my great power and my outstretched arm have made the earth, with the men and animals that are on the earth, and I give it to whomever it seems right to me”. Earthly rulers, kings, presidents and leaders of any sort serve under God’s power and determination. And He alone is in control.
God has made a decision to give Nebuchadnezzar control for a time. “I have given all these lands into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar, the king of Babylon, my servant, and I have given him also the beasts of the field to serve him”. It is being done on God’s timeline in God’s way. Of course, no one wants that outcome, but it is how God is going to restore his people and bring them back to himself. They will have to go through some difficult times to learn the importance of obedience and following God.
We must never forget that God has all things in the universe at his disposal, even those that seem powerful on their own. “All the nations shall serve him and his son and his grandson, until the time of his own land comes. Then many nations and great kings shall make him their slave”. God is in control, and He’s made it clear that the change will last for a very long time. People are going to be under the rule of another kingdom until they learn to walk I obedience. It is a lesson we all have to learn – to follow God.
Jeremiah makes it clear that there will be others who will come and try to disrupt God’s plan by telling them falsehoods and lies. “Do not listen to the words of the prophets who are saying to you, ‘You shall not serve the king of Babylon,’ for it is a lie that they are prophesying to you. I have not sent them”. There are always those who try and get people to follow lies and pull them off course. God wants us to discern the truth. We have to listen carefully to His Word only. He promises to restore His people in due time. “Then I will bring them back and restore them to this place”. But it is His timeline, not ours. He alone plans the future!
