Jeremiah 25

Jeremiah 25 has the prophet reminding the people that God’s been giving Him truth for a very long time.  “For twenty-three years, from the thirteenth year of Josiah the son of Amon, king of Judah, to this day, the word of the Lord has come to me, and I have spoken  persistently to you, but you have not listened”. That’s persistence.  Jeremiah hasn’t given up.  And the message has been consistent and constant.  “Turn now, every one of you,  from his evil way and evil deeds, and  dwell upon the land that the Lord has given to you and your fathers from of old and forever”.

It was equal opportunity prophesying.  Jeremiah’s speaking of what God told him applied to everyone, then and now.  “Do not go after other gods to serve and worship them, or provoke me to anger with the work of your hands. Then I will do you no harm”.  Despite his many years of faithful service to God and the people, they did not listen to him, but they also did not listen to other servants and prophets that God sent to them.  They were hard hearted and Jeremiah not only delivered them the truth, but also the reality of what would come from their disobedience.

Here’s the long term outcome that is coming.  “This whole land shall become a ruin and a waste, and these nations shall serve the king of Babylon seventy years”.  God introduces Himself as the commander of heavenly armies so it is important to listen carefully. Jeremiah announced the coming Babylonian conquest of Judah and Jerusalem.  But God gave Jeremiah an additional revelation. The forced exile of the people of God out of the Promised Land would last for seventy years.  This is some serious news.

Jeremiah describes a vision where judgment would begin among the people of God. They would be the first to drink the cup of God’s fury. Yet judgment would come upon the other nations.  “So I took the cup from the Lord’s hand, and made all the nations to whom the Lord sent me drink it”.  Then he lists the nations that will be impacted:

  • Jerusalem
  • the cities of Judah
  • Pharaoh king of Egypt
  • all the mixed tribes among them
  • all the kings of the land of Uz
  • all the kings of the land of the Philistines (Ashkelon, Gaza, Ekron, and the remnant of Ashdod)
  • Edom, Moab, and the sons of Ammon
  • all the kings of Tyre
  • all the kings of Sidon
  • the kings of the coastland across the sea
  • Dedan, Tema, Buz, and all who cut the corners of their hair
  • all the kings of Arabia
  • all the kings of the mixed tribes who dwell in the desert
  • all the kings of Zimri
  • all the kings of Elam
  • all the kings of Media
  • all the kings of the north
  • all the kingdoms of the world that are on the face of the earth
  • the king of Babylon”

Quite a list of nations, kings and people that will be punished.  When His judgment comes, it will be recognized by all.  “The Lord will roar from on high, and from His holy habitation utter his voice; He will roar mightily against his fold, and shout, like those who tread grapes, against all the inhabitants of the earth”.
