Isaiah 14

Isaiah 14 has the prophet making it clear that God is in control.  “When the Lord has given you rest from your pain and turmoil and the hard service with which you were made to serve…”.  God has made it clear that His people have been struck with pain and turmoil because of the bad choices they have made.  But they will come through it and when they do, there is a list of things God says they “will” do.  At least five times in the first few verses God tells us how His people will take back their land and restore their place in His sight.

It isn’t a list of things that might happen.  It’s absolute and specific.  And what God says, well it happens.  Those who have afflicted pain on His people are going down.  “But you are brought down to Sheol, to the far reaches of the pit”.  They may have been instruments in God’s hand to teach His people a lesson, but when God decides that teaching is over, they will be put into the pit.  No one escapes.  “All the kings of the nations lie in glory, each in his own tomb”.  It doesn’t matter who we are or what power we may have had on earth, everyone goes down.

Then comes a truth that we can claim.  “The Lord of hosts has sworn: “As I have planned, so shall it be, and as I have purposed, so shall it stand….the Lord of hosts has purposed, and who will annul it? His hand is stretched out, and who will turn it back”?  God is in the drivers seat.  He controls all things.  And it is not random.  He has a plan.  That plan is built on His purpose.  And He executes, not some of the time, but all the time.  God’s plan will not be stopped, changed or challenged.  It will happen.

The opportunity for us as Christ Followers is to align with His plan.  We have the opportunity to walk in His ways following His plan under His power.  Can you imagine how far we can go if we did that?  God’s plan will happen, whether we are walking in it or not.  But how much better it will be if we just get on His page and do things His way in His time.  That’s a picture of what a surrendered life looks like.  We do God’s plan following God’s purpose and as a result will experience God’s blessing and outcomes.  Oh how glorious that will be!
