Psalm 108 may appear somewhat familiar at first glance. It contains things similar to verses in Psalm 57:7-11 and Psalm 60:5-12. David is reusing some of his praise and request for God’s help in dealing with his enemies. The words are not exact, but there is no mistake that they are very similar passages. He makes the point that he is following God completely. “My heart is steadfast, O God! I will sing and make melody with all my being”! He tells us “I will give thanks….I will sing praises”. David is all in with God.
He makes the point that God is sovereign and in control. “For your steadfast love is great above the heavens; your faithfulness reaches to the clouds”. David doesn’t try to take credit for the victories of the past. He knows God is the source of those wins. “Be exalted, O God, above the heavens! Let your glory be over all the earth”! But he wants to call out God’s power which has been shows against all these enemies – Shechem, Succoth, Gilead, Manasseh, Ephraim, and Judah. David has defeated them all with God’s help. These were all part of the Nation of Israel.
But it goes further as David calls out God’s sovereignty over Moab, Edom, and Philistia which were enemy nations that he had to defeat. It wasn’t always pretty. God didn’t always give them victory, at least the first time. Then David remembers to call on God and ask for His help. That’s when God shows up. “Grant us help against the foe….With God we shall do valiantly; it is he who will tread down our foes”. David knows with God’s help they can’t lose. God is the power for the win.
We serve the same God today. He is still the way to victory in every area of our life. He is still in absolute control of every aspect of this universe. He is the Creator and Controller of all. The issue is that we often forget that reality and truth and want to do things our way, in our time, on our schedule. It just doesn’t work that way. We need to be steadfast followers of Jesus Christ and put our trust wholly in Him. There is no other solution. There is no other way to live victoriously!
