2 Kings 11

2 Kings 11 has a power play going on. “Athaliah the mother of Ahaziah saw that her son was dead, she arose and destroyed all the royal family”.  She wasn’t going to have anyone else take the throne of her deceased son.  But her scheme was dereated when “Jehosheba, the daughter of King Joram, sister of Ahaziah, took Joash the son of Ahaziah and stole him away from among the king’s sons who were being put to death”.  She wasn’t about to let Athaliah kill this rightful heir to the throne.

“So they hid him from Athaliah, so that he was not put to death. And he remained with her six years, hidden in the house of the Lord, while Athaliah reigned over the land”.  The mother took the throne temporarily as the young child grew up, but her time was coming.  When it was time (at age seven for the boy) “Jehoiada (the priest) sent and brought the captains….to him in the house of the Lord….he made a covenant with them and put them under oath in the house of the Lord”.  He is going to put the rightful king on the throne

They bring the young boy to the house of the Lord and Jehoiada instructs the soldiers to protect him. He told them that “whoever approaches the ranks is to be put to death”.  Serious business and he wants to be sure that the boy is protected.  The Jehoida “brought out the king’s son and put the crown on him and gave him the testimony….proclaimed him king and anointed him….clapped their hands and said, Long live the king”!  The proclamation has been made.  Jehoiada has anointed the boy king and has the warriors there to protect here.

When Athaliah heard the noise of the guard and of the people, she went into the house of the Lord to the people. She “tore her clothes and cried, Treason”!  But her time was over.  Jehoiada has her carried out of God’s house and put to death.  “Jehoiada made a covenant between the Lord and the king and people, that they should be the Lord’s people….the priest posted watchmen over the house of the Lord”.  Jehoiada knew this was God’s plan, to put the boy on the throne.  “Jehoash was seven years old when he began to reign”.
