1 Samuel 23

1 Samuel 23 has David on the run from King Saul.  David knows his life is in danger.  So he does what one does when things are out of control.  “David inquired of the Lord”.  David knew God was his hope.  God directed his path to keep him safe.  As David sought God’s guidance, he is told to go against the Philistines as God was going to give them into his hand.  But his men were afraid and couldn’t understand why they should do that.  But David seeks God again and gets the same instruction.  They went and obeyed Gods direction.  “So David saved the inhabitants of Keilah”.

But that wasn’t really David’s concern.  He was being stalked by Saul and his goons.  So he seeks God again as to what to do.  Should he stay where they were or run.  God clearly tells him to get out of Dodge.  “David and his men, who were about six hundred, arose and departed from Keilah”.  They headed out to the wilderness to try and stay ahead of and safe From Saul’s pursuit.  But “Saul sought him every day, but God did not give him into his hand”.

God has protected David from Saul’s pursuit.  Then Jonathan shows up.  He still loves David and they reconnect and renew that covenant.  Jonathan tells David “Do not fear, for the hand of Saul my father shall not find you”.  God sends the same message through Jonathan He has been giving directly to David as he has sought God’s direction.  But Jonathan brings another piece of promise to David: “You shall be king over Israel, and I shall be next to you”.  That defines their true friendship.

David keeps running with his now 600 or so men, but Saul and the armies in his control are beginning to catch up.  Scripture tells us Saul and his men are on one side of the mountain while David and his are on the other.  Time is running out – that is until God gets involved.  “As Saul and his men were closing in on David and his men to capture them, a messenger came to Saul, saying, Hurry and come, for the Philistines have made a raid against the land”.  God sends a diversion and Saul has to change his focus and head back to protect his land.  God continues to be faithful to David and protect him even with the entire army of Saul chasing after him.
