Joshua 10

Joshua 10 contains one of the most amazing things in scripture as Joshua leads his army to capture the Promised Land.  The king of Jerusalem heard what Joshua and the Israelites had done to Ai and Jericho, and how the people of Gibeon had made a covenant with Joshua to become part of his kingdom.  So the king of Jerusalem reached out to his other buddies who were kings all around the Promised Land and convinced them that they needed to band together and fight those in Gibeon before they became entrenched as part of God’s people.  “The five kings of the Amorites, the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish, and the king of Eglon, gathered their forces and went up with all their armies and encamped against Gibeon and made war against it”.

Of course the Gibeonites immediately called for help from Joshua.  “Come up to us quickly and save us and help us”.  Joshua responded and took his fighting men to go help.  God was there, and told Joshua it would be his victory.  “The Lord threw them into a panic before Israel, who struck them with a great blow at Gibeon….the Lord threw down large stones from heaven….and they died….more who died because of the hailstones than the sons of Israel killed with the sword”.  The battle was the Lord’s, and not only did He empower the army of Israel to cause destruction, He took matters into His own hand and killed them with giant hailstones.  God was definitely on Joshua’s side.

The enemy armies fled – those that were still alive – back toward their fortified cities.  Joshua knows if they make it back it will be far more difficult to finish the job God had given His army of wiping the enemy out.  So Joshua makes a bold request: “Sun, stand still….And the sun stood still, and the moon stopped, until the nation took vengeance on their enemies….There has been no day like it before or since, when the Lord obeyed the voice of a man, for the Lord fought for Israel”.  God stopped the sun from setting and kept the lights on so Joshua and his army could finish their job.  What an amazing request, and an even greater answer from God.  That is the power of being plugged into the God of the universe.  All HIS resources are available when we walk with HIM.

Joshua captured the five kings and hanged them, and went on to one by one go to the fortified cities of these enemies and finish the job.  During this march he conquered “Makkedah….Libnah….Lachish….Gezer….Eglon….Hebron….Debir….Negeb…. Gaza….Goshen…. Kadesh-barnea”.  Joshua “left none remaining, but devoted to destruction all that breathed, just as the Lord God of Israel commanded….captured all these kings and their land at one time, because the Lord God of Israel fought for Israel”.  He had quite a day leading his army against many enemies.  Joshua and his men simply showed up and obeyed.  God did the fighting and destroyed the enemy through the obedience and prayers of Joshua, their leader.
