Exodus 40

Exodus 40 has the construction of the tabernacle complete.  God tells Moses “On the first day of the first month you shall erect the tabernacle of the tent of meeting” and gives him a very detailed description of exactly how that is to happen.  So what does Moses do?  What he has been very good at doing – he obeyed just as the Lord commanded.  “Moses erected the tabernacle. He laid its bases, and set up its frames, and put in its poles, and raised up its pillars. And he spread the tent over the tabernacle and put the covering of the tent over it, as the Lord had commanded Moses”.

Just like the last chapter, we read these powerful words over and over again here.  “As the Lord commanded Moses”.  Moses obeyed God’s commandments.  He did it swiftly and completely.  And it pleased God.  In the same way, if we learn to be obedient and listen carefully to God’s commands and then do them obediently, we too will please God.  That phrase is all over the life of Moses.  He learned how to hear God, and when He did, He immediately obeyed.  That is the lesson we should learn from this great man of God.

Once the tabernacle was set up, there was a specific way that Moses was to prepare the people that would work in it – namely Aaron and his sons who were to be priests.  “Then you shall bring Aaron and his sons to the entrance of the tent of meeting and shall wash them with water and put on Aaron the holy garments. And you shall anoint him and consecrate him that he may serve me as priest…..their anointing shall admit them to a perpetual priesthood throughout their generations”.  They had to be prepared for service, and Moses did as God commanded.

Once things were set up and the people ready – God showed up.  “So Moses finished the work. Then the cloud covered the tent of meeting, and the glory of the Lord filled the tabernacle….the cloud of the Lord was on the tabernacle by day, and fire was in it by night, in the sight of all the house of Israel throughout all their journeys”.  God came and filled the tabernacle after Moses and the people had done what He asked.  That is often the way things work.  God moves after we obey.  We need to listen and act in order to release God’s power in our midst.  Are you doing as the Lord commanded in your patch?
