Exodus 31

Exodus 31 has God speaking to Moses about a couple things.  First God makes it clear that He has prepared the people necessary to complete the building of the tent of meeting.  “I have called by name Bezalel the son of Uri, son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah, and I have filled him with the Spirit of God, with ability and intelligence, with knowledge and all craftsmanship, to devise artistic designs, to work in gold, silver, and bronze, in cutting stones for setting, and in carving wood, to work in every craft”.

God is all over equipping the man who is needed to do the details of the building.  And not just Bezalel, but God calls out Oholiab as well.  If God originates a plan, He also will orchestrate the details down to providing the skills needed.  “I have given to all able men ability, that they may make all that I have commanded you”.  God equips the called, He doesn’t necessarily call the equipped.  There is never a shortage of ability or skill when God asks us to do something.  He is into the details.  He has a plan.

But along with that God also made it very clear that the people were to keep the Sabbath holy.  It wasn’t optional, and the price for violating that was severe.  God says death.  “‘Above all you shall keep my Sabbaths, for this is a sign between me and you throughout your generations, that you may know that I, the Lord, sanctify you. You shall keep the Sabbath, because it is holy for you. Everyone who profanes it shall be put to death. Whoever does any work on it, that soul shall be cut off from among his people”.  It isn’t a mere suggestion.  God is very serious about keeping the Sabbath holy.  “Six days shall work be done, but the seventh day is a Sabbath of solemn rest, holy to the Lord”.

Does it apply to us today?  Well God told Moses that observing the Sabbath should continue “as a covenant forever”.  Seems like it does, eh?  We need to take some time and look at God’s expectations around the Sabbath.  They had a lot of rules and laws around it in Moses time.  Those likely don’t apply to us in the same way today, but there is little doubt that there is a need to pay attention to God’s laws.  After all God “gave to Moses, when he had finished speaking with him on Mount Sinai, the two tablets of the testimony, tablets of stone, written with the finger of God”.  They were important enough for God to write them down.  We need to pay attention and be sure we line up!
