Genesis 21

Genesis 21 has a miracle take place. “Sarah conceived and bore Abraham a son in his old age….Abraham was a hundred years old when his son Isaac was born to him”.  Remember that Sarah had laughed at God when He told them she would bear a son?  Well God was faithful in spite of her lack of faith, and she became pregnant and Isaac was born.  And Abraham circumcised him when he was eight and obeyed all that God had commanded him to do.  This was a miracle as obviously she was beyond the time of child bearing.

Sarah gets all worked up about Ishmael being around now that Abraham has been given a son through her.  So she wants Hagar and her son gone.  Abraham is torn as that boy is his son too.  But God is clear about what to do.  “Whatever Sarah says to you, do as she tells you, for through Isaac shall your offspring be named”.  Some of you may not think that men are to listen to their wives.  It doesn’t get much clearer than what God tells Abraham – not only listen to Sarah – do whatever she says.

Over the years I’ve learned that my bride often has far more insight into what is happening than I do.  God often speaks to women first – and my guess that may be because they are listening and tuned in far better than many of us are as men.  We are more ‘pull up your bootstraps and fix it ourselves’ focused, which may sound good on the surface, but in reality is probably the cause of a lot more pain and suffering than we would need to experience if we just listened to God’s direction.

Abraham sends Hagar and Ishmael off and they experience some hardship.  But God doesn’t ignore them and makes it clear that Ishmael will also be father of a great nation because he is Abraham’s son as well.  The balance of the chapter has Abraham dealing with some other leaders and creating some alliances and covenants to provide peace and safety.  One of the drivers of this was the fact that others noticed Abraham’s relationship with God.  “God is with you in all that you do”.  How he lived made a difference.  People noticed that God was with him.  The truth is that is still the case for you and me today.  Folks are watching.
