Genesis 14

Genesis 14 has two sides setting up to do battle.  On one side is Chedorlaomer who has been in control of the area  for the last 12 years.  And on the other side are kings who had been serving him who now, “in the thirteenth year they rebelled”.  Scripture doesn’t say exactly why they rebelled, but it does tell us that was a poor decision as they were defeated soundly and sent running for cover.  Some of them fell into bitumen pits on their retreat and the rest fled into the hills.

But the winning army made one small mistake – they “took Lot…..and his possessions and went their way”.  Of course they didn’t realize who Abram was or the relationship he had with God.  To them it was just more spoils of their conquering.  But Abram was alerted to the situation by some of his allies.  “When Abram heard that his kinsman had been taken captive, he led forth his trained men, born in his house, 318 of them, and went in pursuit”.  He was not going to let his nephew be taken into captivity.

Abram led his men at night and divided his forces against his enemy, and they defeated them and freed Lot from his captivity.  “He brought back all the possessions, and also brought back his kinsman Lot with his possessions, and the women and the people”.  Abram had run down the enemy from behind and has recovered Lot and all his stuff.  This was the king who had possessed the area for over a dozen years.  No one had been able to defeat him until this time.

But Abram wasn’t fighting alone.  One of the kings who was watching the victory went out to meet him in the valley and said “Blessed be Abram by God Most High, Possessor of heaven and earth; and blessed be God Most High, who has delivered your enemies into your hand”.  It was obvious that God had won this battle.  That is the reality if we get out of the way and let God do the fighting for us.  Far too often we insist on doing things our way in our time and we then are left to fight alone.  Abram tapped the power of God and won the battle.
