John 12:27-41

John 12:27-41 has Jesus in Jerusalem in the middle of a storm.  He has the Jewish leaders lined up to kill Him because He is treading on their turf and they are not about to let Him dilute their power.  So Jesus has a decision to make.  Does He run and take care of His own interests?  “And what am I going to say? Father, get me out of this? No, this is why I came in the first place”.  Nope – He is going to stay the course and follow God’s plan even when it means putting His own life on the line.  We need to learn this principal.  God’s plan is always the best one, even when it seems to cost more than we might want to pay.

Those following Him are admonished as to how they should live.  “Walk by the light you have so darkness doesn’t destroy you. If you walk in darkness, you don’t know where you’re going”.  The truth of the matter is there are only two options for how we live.  We often want to try and stay in the shadows with one foot in the light doing things God’s way, and the other in the dark doing things our way.  But we can’t straddle it that way.  We have to choose to walk in the light – according to God’s Word and leading, or we will be living with the enemy in darkness and contrary to what God desires.  There is no middle ground.  We can’t be sort of in the light.

As you have the light, believe in the light. Then the light will be within you, and shining through your lives. You’ll be children of light”.  We have the light.  It is God’s Word written for us to show us how to live in the light.  Far too often we don’t read, study and understand what that means, so we fall flat on our face doing things our own way.  But God has equipped us to succeed.  It comes down to our willingness to make the choice to walk as Christ Followers living according to God’s direction.  It is a choice we have to make intentionally, and failing to choose God means we fall over to the other side.

Jesus did signs and miracles but the greatest thing He gave us was Himself.  He showed us how to live, and scripture is filled with not only His words but His life story of what we need to do in order to live well God’s way.  God calls us to Himself.  But we can make the mistake of listening to the lies of the enemy and our own selfish interests and get to the point where “Their eyes are blinded, their hearts are hardened, So that they wouldn’t see with their eyes and perceive with their hearts”.  In that condition, it is difficult to see the need and the free gift of grace through Christ.  But God is still there extending forgiveness to anyone who will believe in Jesus.  Are you walking in the light?  If not, it’s time to open the curtains and let the light in!
