John 12:20-26

John 12:20-50 has Jesus getting clearer about why He has come.  He tells the people the story of a grain of wheat.  “Unless a grain of wheat is buried in the ground, dead to the world, it is never any more than a grain of wheat. But if it is buried, it sprouts and reproduces itself many times over”.  This is the magic of a seed.  When it is placed in the dirt, given some warmth and moisture, it dies to itself and sprouts to create a harvest.  That is what Jesus wants to do in our lives.  He was buried but came to life to bring a harvest in our lives.

But for us to be able to experience that, we have to be willing to die to self and make Him Lord.  “In the same way, anyone who holds on to life just as it is destroys that life. But if you let it go, reckless in your love, you’ll have it forever, real and eternal”.  Being a Christ Follower means exactly what it says.  We have to stop following our own desires and follow Him.  We have to put off self and put on Jesus.  We move out of the driver’s seat and allow the Savior to slip in and take the wheel.  If we refuse to do that, if we can’t allow Jesus to be Lord, we can’t receive Him as our Savior.

Jesus is clear that a relationship with Him will change things.  “If any of you wants to serve me, then follow me….The Father will honor and reward anyone who serves me”.  When we become a Christ Follower saved by His grace, our mission in life changes.  It is no longer about me doing whatever I want or feels good.  It is about following Jesus and being a servant to Him and living the way we have been instructed in God’s Word.  It is about changed lives and a different way of doing things.

Jesus is clear that following Him is not about you or me, it is all about Him.  It is about our willingness to let go of self, and put our energy and focus and belief in Him.  We have to die to our own desires and wishes and take on serving Him as the mission of our lives.  Is it worth it?  The rewards are pretty amazing.  Eternal life which lasts a very long time.  The Father’s honor and rewards for our willingness to believe, follow and serve.  New life that bears a harvest when we are reckless in love.  Being a Christ Follower is the best decision we can make.  But we have to do exactly that.  We have to choose to follow Jesus.  We have to believe.  Have you made that choice?
