Zechariah 3

Zechariah 3 gives us some great promise and truth about the coming of Jesus.  It begins with Joshua standing before God in filthy garments.  All of us stand before God that way.  We are filthy with sin, and unworthy to be in His presence.  Our future is bleak when left to our own situation.  And as happens for each of us, there is “Satan standing at his right hand to accuse him”.  We have a very real enemy whose mission it is to keep us from getting right with God and having those filthy garments of sin removed.  Satan wants us to perish for eternity.

But God doesn’t leave us to deal with the enemy, or our sin problem, all by ourself.  In Joshua’s case, there was an Angel standing there with Him as he faced the accusations.  And that Angel did what God instructed and “I have taken your iniquity away from you, and I will clothe you with pure vestments.”  That is what Jesus does in our life if we will only come to Him in confession of our sin, repenting and receiving His grace which was His shed blood on the Cross.  God has made a way.  And He is standing ready to give us cleansing from our sin so we can be clothed with clean garments.

Joshua is set free from his sin and then given this charge.  “If you will walk in my ways and keep my charge, then you shall rule my house and have charge of my courts, and I will give you the right of access among those who are standing here”.  Obedience matters.  God does desire and expect that we will walk with Him.  And when we make that choice, because it is absolutely a choice that we control, God will bless us.  In Joshua’s case it meant leadership and responsibility for God’s people.  But God wants us to walk with Him in every way every day.

God loves us and there is nothing He would rather do than set us free from the yoke of sin. He wants to cleanse us and put us in clean clothes.  And He is able, more than able, to do that to any who will get right with Him through Jesus.  “I will remove the iniquity of this land in a single day”.  God can purify and set our eternity right whenever we come to Him.  There is no quota or limit.  Just our need to come and seek His forgiveness and grace.  And we also need to let others know as “every one of you will invite his neighbor to come”.  Jesus stands ready to save all of us.  We only need to come!
