Zechariah 2

Zechariah 2 has the prophet experiencing a message from God through angels.  “I lifted my eyes and saw, and behold, a man with a measuring line in his hand”.  Zechariah lifted his eyes toward God, and he received a vision of what was to come.  Do you lift your eyes to God?  Are you plugged in to seeking God’s direction by just coming and looking for His answer?  Zechariah communicates with the man with a ruler and asks what he is doing.  He was measuring Jerusalem to prepare for the return of God’s people.

Angels came and told Zechariah that “Jerusalem shall be inhabited as villages without walls, because of the multitude of people and livestock in it”.  It doesn’t make a lot of sense for Jerusalem to be inhabited again because the walls have been destroyed and torn down.  There was nothing to come back to if you look at it at the surface.  But one thing changes that entire picture.  God’s promise.  He says “I will be to her a wall of fire all around….I will be the glory in her midst”.

God promises to be the protector as He calls the remnant home.  The people have been scattered all around, but God calls them home and says He’ll help them not only escape their captors, but also plunder their lands.  “I will shake my hand over them, and they shall become plunder for those who served them”.  God is going to set them free.  He will liberate them and allow them to come back.  It fulfills His prophecy and will bring His people back home.

But there is more.  God gives them another promise through Zechariah.  “I come and I will dwell in your midst, declares the Lord”.  God had left them and allowed them to be scattered and living as captives in many foreign lands.  But He has remembered His covenant and is now bringing them back and is promising that He too will come back and live with them there.  It is a powerful promise to His people.  He is not only calling them home, He is coming home Himself to be among His own.
