Ezekiel 38

Ezekiel 38 has the prophet getting a word from the Lord about Gog, of the land of Magog.  Bible scholars are not exactly sure what this prophecy actually refers to.  It appears to be that Israel will be reborn as a country in the last days, the Jewish people will come back to the Holy Land from exile all over the world, the Jewish people will rebuild the ancient ruins and make the deserts bloom again. These things have all happened, and this suggests we are getting closer to the fulfillment of the next set of prophecies.

There are a number of views about how this will happen.  But in general, scholars agree that “Gog” is the prince, “Magog“, his land.  This prophecy will be fulfilled by Gog, who is felt by some commentators to be a personal name, whereas others see it more as a title like “Czar” or “dictator”. Gog clearly appears to describe a political and/or military leader and thus suggests an individual is in view. There likely will be a leader that will come and pursue the children of Israel and attempt to wipe them out.

This leader is going to assemble all the armies from the region and come after God’s people.  They will be confident and come after them to take great spoil.  It will seem like a simple plan and approach – after all the size of the enemies armies will be immense and will come from all directions.  But they are miscalculating the one factor that gives God’s children the advantage – God’s power and protection.  When Gog’s armies come, God says “my wrath will be roused in my anger”.

When God takes action, everyone knows.  Scripture tells us there will be earthquakes and even the birds and beasts will quake.  God is someone to be feared, especially when He is angry.  And Gog will feel that anger.  God will summon all His power against these evil enemies and He will deal with the enemy with “pestilence and bloodshed”.  God is not tolerant.  He will do what He says.  “I will show my greatness and my holiness and make myself known in the eyes of many nations. Then they will know that I am the Lord”.  This prophecy continues in the next chapter…..
