2 Kings 19

2 Kings 19 has heard that the Assyrians are planning to lay siege to the city and take over the kingdom.  He immediately goes to God.  “As soon as King Hezekiah heard it, he tore his clothes and covered himself with sackcloth and went into the house of the Lord”.  Lesson here is that when we face things that overwhelm, we need to go straight to God.  We need to seek God when we are facing difficult things – not after we exhaust our own efforts – but immediately.  And with the acknowledgement that He alone is God.

Hezekiah relays his fears and the circumstances that are at hand.  God already knew the situation.  But He listens and allows us to bring our requests to Him.  But God already had His plan in place.  “Behold, I will put a spirit in him, so that he shall hear a rumor and return to his own land, and I will make him fall by the sword in his own land”.  No defense needed.  No swords were going to have to be lifted.  God tells Hezekiah that He has things well at hand.

The bad news continues and Hezekiah comes to God and Isaiah His prophet yet again.  “Incline your ear, O Lord, and hear; open your eyes, O Lord, and see….save us, please, from his hand, that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that you, O Lord, are God alone”.  Prayer is such a powerful gift God has given us.  We can come to the foot of His throne and place our cares and concerns.  He is there.  He is listening.  And we need to spend a lot more time there than we do.

So what did God do?  “That night the angel of the Lord went out and struck down 185,000 in the camp of the Assyrians”.  Hezekiah or his people did not need to do anything except trust.  God has it well in hand.  He took control and wiped out the enemy.  And He also completed what He told Hezekiah – that the king of Assyria would be killed.  That was done by the kings sons and he was struck down just as God had said.  God is in control.  He is our advocate and friend.  He hears our prayers if we only come to Him and make them known!
