Psalm 76

Psalm 76 is a fitting scripture for today.  It reminds us that “God is known; his name is great”.  He was front and center when our forefathers created this nation – a new nation built upon a desire for religious freedom and the right to worship the Living God.  “Glorious are you, more majestic than the mountains”.  God is awesome.  He is the creator of the mountains.  He is greater than them all.  How is it that we can forget just how awesome and glorious He is?

We’re reminded that none can stand against Him.  “At your rebuke, O God of Jacob, both rider and horse lay stunned”.  God is in control.  None can stand before Him.  “You are to be feared! Who can stand before you when once your anger is roused”?  Getting on the wrong side of God is a bad decision.  There is aprice.  Sin puts us there – separated from God and facing His judgment.  It is a bad spot to be in.  Oh that we would understand the reality of God’s character and what lies ahead if we don’t live for Him.

From the heavens you uttered judgment; the earth feared and was still, when God arose to establish judgment, to save all the humble of the earth”.  If you wonder if God is paying attention – He is.  If you wonder if He will hold us accountable – He will.  If you wonder if there will be a judgment – there will.  God is rightly to be feared.  He is to be praised.  God sits on the throne and watches us to and fro.  He will determine our eternity when He utters His judgment based on the requirements of His Book – the Bible.

So what are we to do?  “Make your vows to the Lord your God and perform them; let all around him bring gifts to him who is to be feared”.  We are to get right with God.  To trust and obey. To live out our vows to the Lord and to bring Him gifts – the biggest being a surrendered and obedient life. Are you living that way?  Do you spend your day living for the Lord, of for self?  Far too often we spend our time focused on me, myself and I.  We need to get our priorities right and put Him first.  That is what He desires.  That is what He requires!
