Ecclesiastes 5

Ecclesiastes 5 has some solid instruction and wisdom.  It begins with these three very simple yet important words.  “Guard your steps”.  The context here continues to tell us to guard our steps when we go to God’s house, but the reality is that we need to guard our steps all the time.  How we live matters.  There are consequences to our choices, whether it is in our foolishness in how we enter God’s house, or how we live the daily routine of life.  We need to wake up and realize that what we do matters.

The first example is how we speak.  Words matter too.  “Be not rash with your mouth, nor let your heart be hasty to utter a word before God….therefore let your words be few”.  Let’s face it.  Most of us a pretty loose with our mouths.  We let words fly without thinking about their impact or consequences.  We need to learn to think first and then speak.  We need to be quiet until we have considered the words we will speak. “Let not your mouth lead you into sin”. That is never more true than when we are talking with God.

Why?  Because God hears our words.  And that is particularly true when we give a vow to God.  “When you vow a vow to God, do not delay paying it, for he has no pleasure in fools. Pay what you vow”.  God expects us to do what we say.  And it needs to be done without delay.  Obedience is the requirement.  There is no room for anything less.

The other main lesson here is that money is not the answer.  “He who loves money will not be satisfied with money, nor he who loves wealth with his income”.  Our needs will never be satisfied by money or stuff.  It will not satisfy the deepest needs we have.  God does provide all we have.  He is the source of every good thing we have, including our money and wealth.  “Everyone also to whom God has given wealth and possessions and power to enjoy them, and to accept his lot and rejoice in his toil – this is the gift of God”.  It is a gift from God.  We might fool ourselves into believing we do something to generate wealth, but truth be known, it all comes from God and is His.  We are just entrusted with it.  To God be the glory!
