Psalm 73

Psalm 73 talks about God and His goodness.  It points out that God is good “to those who are pure in heart”.  The condition of our heart is very important to God.  Out of the heart comes our actions, our words, and our life.  We need to realize that God is far more interested in our heart than what we do.  Our actions are merely an outcome of our heart.  If that is right, what we do will be too.

The psalmist confesses that “my feet had almost stumbled, my steps had nearly slipped”.  Sounds like a slippery slope doesn’t it?  He goes on to tell us what was pulling him down: “I was envious of the arrogant when I saw the prosperity”.  Ever been sucked into thinking that way – that what others have are the things we want and we will do whatever it takes to get there?  That is dangerous thinking that will lead us to fall.  Envy is a powerful heart condition and one that we must fight to overcome.

The psalmist admits the struggle to understand how to deal with the reality that the wicked seem to have so much and yet don’t deserve it.  Check out the strategy he used to find out how this can be.  “But when I thought how to understand this, it seemed to me a wearisome task, until I went into the sanctuary of God; then I discerned their end”.  It wasn’t until he went to God that he could see the reality – that evil doesn’t pay even when it seems so appealing in the short term.  There is a price, and it is severe, but it isn’t always obvious and often is not evident in the moment.

So what is the secret?  Get our hearts right.  “There is nothing on earth that I desire besides you….God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever….for me it is good to be near God; I have made the Lord God my refuge”.  There it is – put God where He belongs in your life.  He is to be our desire.  He is our strength and portion.  God should be center of our life and world.  It is good to be near Him.  When we get that right, God is our refuge.  He is our King.  Don’t feel close to God?  Guess who moved!
