Psalm 85

Psalm 85 is a great chapter that talks about the very nature of God.  It gives us a picture of God’s love – as it reveals how He treats us when we fall short.  Check out the list of actions God has taken toward His people when they were not living the way He demands.  This list is God’s love toward His people as sinners and failures in their walk:

–       “you were favorable to your land

–       you restored the fortunes

–       You forgave the iniquity of your people

–       you covered all their sin

–       You withdrew all your wrath

–       you turned from your hot anger

God loves us.  The list could have had a very different set of actions – destroyed, punished, cast out, whacked – but God is focused on one thing when it comes to us as people – reconciliation.  He wants us to fix the separation between Him and us which is called sin, and get back into right relationship.  God’s desire is not to punish us, but to redeem us.  The psalmist says “restore us again…..revive us again”.  And that has been the history of mankind.  Man screws up and disobeys and God has constantly been willing to restore and redeem.  God is always willing to let us back in His presence if we will only repent and come back.

God does love us.  “Show us your steadfast love, O Lord, and grant us your salvation”.  Not only does He love us, He has taken the steps to provide us a way to salvation.  He has prepared the path.  It is up to us to receive the gift and accept His offer.  He also has given us the direction for life.  “Let me hear what God the Lord will speak, for he will speak peace to his people, to his saints; but let them not turn back to folly”.  If  we aren’t hearing from God, we aren’t listening.  He has already written and provided the framework for how life should be lived – the Bible.  And yes, He certainly talks to us in other ways as well, but the Bible is sure the place to begin.

The real key is that we don’t turn back to folly.  Far too often we know what to do based on God’s truth, but we choose to turn and do things our way rather than God’s way.  That is called sin.  That is absolute folly.  We have been given the truth straight from God’s mouth, and yet we somehow think in our own little mind that we are smarter and know better.  How stupid is that?  We didn’t create mankind.  We don’t know the master plan of the Father.  But when it comes down to making the decisions, we are smarter than God.  Here is the real truth: “the Lord will give what is good, and our land will yield its increase”.  God is in control.  God sits on the throne.  He does not get direction from you or me.  We get this backward so often.  It is time we realize who is King and Lord and start to live that way!
