Numbers 19

Numbers 19 is a chapter about dead people and how to deal with cleansing for those who are involved with them.  It begins with instructions to the priests around how to cleanse themselves after giving a sin offering.  Lots of detailed instructions on washing and being kept out of the camp for a while etc.  Then the instruction moves to dead people and those who come into contact with them.

God is pretty clear that a person who came into any kind of contact was unclean.  They needed to be cleansed through washing of clothes and themselves, as well as offerings.  And it was serious business.  “If the man who is unclean does not cleanse himself, that person shall be cut off from the midst of the assembly, since he has defiled the sanctuary of the Lord”.  Failure to do it God’s way has some significant impact – being cut off from the assembly.  You either did it God’s way or were thrown out.

God still has some areas like this – His way period.  One of those has to do with death for us today – not so much in the touching of a dead body – but rather what happens after death because of our sin.  Scripture is clear that the wages of sin is death – we are all doomed because of the way we live.  But God made a way for us to deal with that sin – He sent Jesus as a sacrificial lamb to the Cross to offer us grace that will cover and cleanse us from sin just like the offerings and washing did for the folks in this time period.

But we have to accept that gift – come into a personal relationship with Jesus as our Savior and Lord – and then be cleansed and able to enter eternity with God Himself.  It isn’t automatic. It isn’t something we get because our parents or grandparents were Christ Followers.  Each of us must come to our own decision regarding Jesus. What have you done with your sin and the offer of Christ to save you from it?  Have you accepted His gift of eternal life?  If not, why not?   The time is drawing near.
