Job 37

In Job 37, Elihu just keeps on preaching.  His first words of wisdom are simple: “keep listening”.  If we only put those two words into practice all day every day in our lives we would go a lot further.  First we need to keep listening to God and His Word.  That is the number one area of focus.  That means we pay attention to what God is up to around us.  Elihu talks about hearing God through the thunder and lightning and all sorts of other things wecan see around us.  “He does great things that we cannot comprehend”.  We need to wake up and literally smell the roses.  God is talking to us continually through creation, His Word, and the Spirit that lives in us.  “He seals up the hand of every man, that all men whom he made may know it”.  Often people try to play the card ‘I didn’t know’ but that isn’t going to cut it at judgment day.  All of us know Him by the things He has done.  There will be no playing dumb.  We will be called to account.  So if you aren’t listening – it is past time to start.

Elihu then reminds us yet again that God is absolutely in control.  “Whether for correction or for his land or for love, he causes it to happen”.  What a great reality to grasp.  It doesn’t matter why God does what He does.  He causes things to happen.  He is in control.  It may be correction, it may be love, but it is always God.  He is in control.  He sits on the throne.  He alone is King.  We sometimes lose sight of that simple reality trying to figure out the meaning behind what happens.  The truth is that it is God.  That is what we need to cling to.

And what He does will be amazing.  “The wondrous works of him who is perfect in knowledge” is how Elihu describes what God is up to.  God doesn’t do these things in a vacuum.  He absolutely has a plan and executes. He is totally in the know and has complete insight into what is occurring constantly.  “He is great in power; justice and abundant righteousness he will not violate”.  God follows His plan.  He doesn’t run out of steam – He never gets off in the weeds.  He stays His course and executes His wondrous plan.  No limitations to His ability like we have.  He just does it!

As Elihu winds down this chapter he reminds us that God “does not regard any who are wise in their own conceit”.  This is a familiar teaching of Scripture.  God is not impressed by what we think of ourselves.  Life is not about you or me.  It is His world and His story. We are merely allowed to be part of what He is doing. When we begin to think we are the main characters in His Book – we are going to quickly be reminded that it just isn’t so.  Pride is a big problem.  It is not something God will tolerate. He alone is in control.  He alone is the Master.  Put Him where He belongs in your life.  That means He is on the throne, He is driving, and life is focused on Him.  Are you living that way?  If not, it will happen someday.  Scripture tells us that every knee will bow and tongue confess.  That includes you and me.  Much wiser to start that process now!
