Romans 10

Romans10 talks about salvation and the formula for how we can be saved.  Paul makes it clear what his desire is: “my heart’s desire and prayer….is that they may be saved…..that they have a zeal”.  I love the two words he puts together here.  Saved and zeal.  Not only do we need salvation to deal with our sin problem – we need to understand exactly how that happens and once saved – our lives should be changed drastically and we should have zeal for God.  We should not be lackluster in our faith.  We should pursue Him with all our heart, soul, mind and strength – hmmm, seems like I have heard that before.  Oh yeah – that is exactly what scripture tells us in other places.  Life as a Christ Follower should never be ho hum, status quo, just get through the day kind of living.  God should be our pursuit every moment.

This chapter contains a very important set of verses on how salvation happens.  Check out the simplicity and beauty of what God’s plan for you and me is: “If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved”.  Did you catch that?  Two simple steps – confess with your mouth and believe in your heart.  So why is it so hard for so many to get to this point?  Because belief means that we are no longer in the driver seat for our own life.  It means that we have to depend on Jesus and His shed blood for salvation. It means it is no longer about me, but Him.  This is a universal promise.  Paul says it this way a few verses later: “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved”.  That is a pretty bold statement, but it is God’s plan.  Does God really promise this?  That salvation comes from Jesus.  It comes one way.  It is not based on what I do but in whom I believe?  He can, and He does, because “the same Lord is Lord of all”.  Jesus is the way for everyone.  Jew or Greek, free or slave, American or from somewhere else in the world. He is the only way to God.

But there is a problem with this strategy – it depends on people sharing the truth.  It depends on mere humans sharing life and letting others in their patch know about Jesus.  People can’t call on the name of the Lord if they are unaware of His love and sacrifice and grace.  They can’t come to know Him as Savior if they have not heard.  Paul says it this way:

–       “how are they to call on him in whom they have not believed

–       how are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard

–       how are they to hear without someone preaching

–       how are they to preach unless they are sent

Here is the reality folks.  We are the how.  We are God’s chosen way to share the truth of His love.  We are the messengers – through life and word and deed.  We enable this truth to be true: “So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ”.

So what are we to do?  We are to live zealously for God and His Son.  We are to live in a way that people know we are Christ Followers.  We are the messengers of hope to a world that needs it desperately.  Have you shared Jesus with anyone lately?  During this Christmas season – make sure to share the reason we celebrate.  Make sure those in your patch see Jesus alive in you.  Don’t just believe in your heart – confess with your lips – shout it from the mountaintop.  Jesus Christ is Lord!
