Psalm 116

Psalm 116 gives us a glimpse into the heart of God.  Our psalmist is having a rather rough go of it.  He calls out and God hears: “I love God because He listened to me….listened so intently”.  God loves us – we have to start there.  He is very much in love with each and every one of us.  He knows us well since He created us.  He wants to be in relationship with us.  “Up against it, I didn’t know which way to turn”.  Been there?  Done that?  Did you respond the way our psalmist did: “…then I called out to God for help”.  Where have we seen that before?  It is the human way.  It is how we tend to try and handle things on our own.  Wait til we exhaust all our own efforts and when we are against the edge and don’t know what to do, then we finally figure out where we should have started in the first place – calling out to God.  Does He listen and respond?  Check out what the psalmist tells us: “God is gracious – it is He who makes things right, our most compassionate God”.  Yes He does.  He always listens and responds.  And when He does – when He has handled things and rescued us from the situation – we are told to “relax and rest.  God has showered you with blessings”.  How are you coming resting in God?  Do you do it?  Do you just trust Him?  Or are you always trying to handle things – worried and overwhelmed by the struggles of life.

Our psalmist tells us of a better way.  “I’m striding in the presence of God, alive in the land of the living”.  That is quite a change from his earlier struggles of feeling helpless and at the end of his rope.  What changed?  He has come to the realization that God is in control.  What a weight is lifted when we finally figure that out.  What a better way to live.  And then we can move to the next step: “What can I give back to God”?  God has blessed me so what can I do to bless Him?  Here are some suggestions our psalmist gives us:

–       I’ll lift high the cup or salvation – witness

–       I’ll pray in the name of God – relationship

–       I’ll complete what I promised God I’d do – obedience

–       I’ll do it together with His people – fellowship

Our writer goes on to say it this way: “Oh God, here I am, your servant, your faithful servant: set me free for your service”.  What is service?  It is partnering with God to make a difference in the lives of people. It is joining Him in what He is already doing.  It is seeing an opportunity to be intentional and significant in the life of another.  It is about walking with God as He touches lives and being His hands and feet.  It is being Jesus with skin on for those in our circle.  Have you been set free for His service?  Or are you so buried in your own schedule and list of things to do you can’t fit God’s work in?  That is what tends to happen.  We get so busy with our own stuff we can’t serve God.  We can’t fit it in.  Do you have white space on your calendar to make a difference for Him?  That is how we give back.  We serve.  We partner with Him and join His plan.  We walk in obedience as He leads.  That is where God wants us.  Right beside Him doing His work His way in His time.  Are you there?
