Deuteronomy 6

Deuteronomy 6 gives us some very powerful truths that will help us live “good long lives….a life of abundance and bounty”.  God wants to bless us.  In fact He already has, and He wants to bless us even more.  Moses goes on to write that he “gives us this good life….set-right and put-together life for us”.  But there is a catch.  We need to “do this entire commandment”.  It is based on our obedience to His commandments.  Once again Moses gives us some very direct instruction about how to do it.  Here are four that jumped out at me:

  1. “Love GOD, your God, with your whole heart: love him with all that’s in you, love him with all you’ve got
  2. Write these commandments that I’ve given you today on your hearts. Get them inside of you and then get them inside your children
  3. Talk about them wherever you are, sitting at home or walking in the street; talk about them from the time you get up in the morning to when you fall into bed at night
  4.  Tie them on your hands and foreheads as a reminder; inscribe them on the doorposts of your homes and on your city gates”

We need to love Him, learn and memorize His commands, talk about them continually, and remember them always.  Being a follower is not a part time job my friends.  To be a Christ Follower – it is 24X7X365.  It is continual and constant.  And we need to equip ourselves in a way that allows us to do that.  So that means we need to be immersed in God’s truth and focused on it continually.  And we need to pass that truth into our children and remind everyone continually that God’s way is the only way.  There is blessing with that obedience – as scripture so plainly shows us over and over.

So that is pretty clear – God expects us to be focused on walking with Him.  But another thing that jumped off the pages in this passage is also a familiar theme in Scripture: “don’t forget how you got there”.  How are you doing at recording God’s faithfulness?  Do you journal, or have a place that you can look back and see just how faithful God has been in your life?  It is amazing at how quickly we forget just how blessed we have been by our Father if we don’t write it down.  God wants us to record His blessings and touch – He wants us to share that with others too.  We remember for our own good, but also for those who will follow.  It is so much more powerful to share God’s love when we can give specific examples of that in our lives.  Too often we have already forgotten His touch.  Don’t forget, and if you are like me, that means write it down!
