Ezekiel 36

The second half of Ezekiel 36 contains God’s plan to restore the people.  Ezekiel makes it clear why they have been destroyed: “I sentenced them according to how they had lived” was God’s explanation.  We get what we deserve if it depends on us.  That is why we are doomed without Jesus.  But God did and does have a plan.  For the people of Israel in Ezekiel’s day God says this: “I’ll pour pure water over you and scrub you clean….give you a new heart, put a new spirit in you…. that’s God-willed, not self-willed…..put my Spirit in you and make it possible for you to do what I tell you and live by my commands”.  God wants to make us brand new.  So He sent Jesus.  He is our scrubbing bubbles and wants to give us a new heart.  He is our way to create a clean heart and put a new and right spirit within us.  Jesus is the current answer to our very big problem called sin.  He also makes it possible for us to do what God has told us – we will never make it on our own.  The Israelites struggled with being self willed – sound familiar?  I certainly have that disease.  I struggle with wanting to do it my way and live by my rules.  But God has given me the complete book of rules called the Bible.  He has set the standard for which I need to live – Jesus Christ.  I can’t obey the rules or live like Jesus on my own – won’t happen.  So I need to line up my life with both filled with God’s Holy Spirit – that is my only hope.  That is where I will get a new heart, a renewed mind and a right spirit.  People are people – we have always been and continue to be lost on our own.  We need God to save us from ourself.
