Psalm 139 is a very fitting chapter for me this week. I have been in Florida performing a SWOT analysis for a fellow IT provider, and this chapter really says that God is in that same business with our lives. “God, investigate my life…..get all the facts firsthand…..open book to you…..you know what I’m thinking”. God knows us. He knows our strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats. In fact, He knows firsthand every detail about our life. He knows exactly what makes us tick. He knows what we do and why we do it before we do. God knows our heart. “You know everything I’m going to say before I start”. Pretty scary eh? Have you ever experienced the joy of being so close to someone you can complete the sentence they begin? Well God not only can complete your words, He knows them before you even begin speaking. That is really knowing us. Deeply, completely as only He can. He is where we are going and is where we came from. He is everywhere – “He even sees me in the dark. At night I’m immersed in the light”.
The enemy wants to get us in the dark. It makes us think that no one can see what we are doing. So often sin happens in the dark, or at least what we think is the dark. But God puts light in our darkness. He drives the darkness away. He also makes a very important statement: “I am marvelously made”. We are God’s creation – His design. There is a line from some years ago that really is true: “God don’t make no junk”. God has created us – “you know me inside and out….you know every bone in my body…..you know exactly how I was made, bit by bit, how I was sculpted from nothing into something”. He knows us intimately – “like an open book”. Does that comfort you – that God knows us like a well read book? He does. He had “the days of my life all prepared before I’d even lived one day”. That is pretty completely knowing us. He does – He created us according to His plan in His time. There are no accidents. There are no mistakes. There is only God’s plan creating us His way in His time. Life is a blessing. We need to treat it as precious and live it fully every breath we have!
