Today’s chapter really hits me right between the eyes. It is about how we want to hang on to things and control and manage them ourselves rather than letting go and letting God have them. Oh how I struggle with that one. I want to try and do things on my own with my own strength. I try and try and work and work and struggle and struggle. I want to be in control and to get it done by myself. Sound familiar to you too? It is our nature and the one of the fallacies the world tells us. But these lines from the book just whack me: “I made you with my own hands. I made you with a purpose and I died to buy you back. Why can’t you trust me. I gave my life for you. I’m the God of the universe. You can just let go and I will catch you.” Wow – what a poke that is. It is a control issue. I want to be in charge. I want to do it myself even when self cannot possibly do it nearly as well as God. Why are we like this? We serve the God of the universe with unlimited power and resources and we want to tackle all life’s problems with our own strength. Talk about stupid. That would be it. Why would I even think that I could possibly deal with it on my own, let alone do it better than I could with God? I don’t know other than I never slow down and stop long enough to consider it. We get so busy going so fast trying to do so much we forget that God is really where we need to turn. We have to learn to let go and let God.
Some would say that it is too risky to trust God like that. How can I be sure He will come through? First of all, can anyone tell me a time when God didn’t do what He said? I didn’t say “do what you wanted” but rather what He said He would do. God NEVER fails. Secondly, can any of you say that you always accomplish what you set out to do without fail? That you are 100% dependable and execute flawlessly. I would have to drop a zero on that count myself. So why is it so hard to take a risk and trust God? I don’t know other than we are programmed to be independent and it is reinforced from birth. But more importantly the enemy wants us to think that way. The enemy wants us depending on self rather than the real source of power. If we do that we are not nearly as effective as we will be with God. So what better scheme than to get all humans to believe that they should hang on to all their problems and lead with their own power. What a brilliant way to limit what God could do with people who were committed to Him. Just keep them from letting go and focused on keeping control. We have to learn to let go. It means change which we all feel as a big risk. But there really is no risk with God. He is always faithful. He never fails. That doesn’t mean He always does it our way. But He will always come through. We have to get out of the way and move from trying to be in control to being available for Him to use. It is a huge shift but not only powerful, also frees us from the heavy burden of being responsible for it all. Are you willing to let go today? God will catch you….
