1 Chronicles 13

David demonstrates a very wise method of leading as we look at chapter 13.  Look at what it tells us: “David consulted with all of his leaders, the commanders of thousands and of hundreds. 2 Then David addressed the entire assembly of Israel, “If it seems right to you, and it is GOD’s will….”.  I think we can learn some key lessons here.

1.  David “consulted with all of his leaders”.  He did not assume he had all the answers.  He did not dictate things because he was in charge.  He took the time to ask those who had been placed in a role as leader for their counsel.  It is always easier to just plow ahead on our own path guys.  But that is not necessarily the best route.  It doesn’t tell us he took a vote of all who were there and followed it – but it does say he consulted.  That means to sit down and discuss – to gather counsel – so a wise decision can be reached.

2.  He “assembled the entire assembly”.  After the decision was reached – David tells everyone face to face.  He made it known to all what was happening.  This is a big Achilles heal for me.  I am good at making decisions but poor at informing people of what and why.  In order to lead effectively, we have to do both.  We have to be very clear about what will happen and even more clear as to why it will happen.

3.  David begins his address with “if it seems right to you” – he is seeking buy in from the crowd.  He didn’t start by saying – this is how it is going to be – even though that was in fact the truth.  He approached the crowd with an opportunity for them to first get on board.

4.  David makes it clear that “God’s will” was the determining factor in their direction.  There is no room to wonder if decisions are going through the funnel of God’s will for verification and approval.  That is the final test – the determining factor.

David leads by example – he includes his team – he includes the crowd – but most importantly he includes God’s will as the final factor.  We need to lead the same way!
